So, the first thing to note is that the first ship is going to be called Scarlet Lady. And Rather than catering to families, Scarlet Lady will be adults-only , they say it’s ‘adult-by-design’ because the experience has been designed from the ground up as a sanctuary at sea for the 18 plus traveller. It can house 2,770 passengers on board.

The design of the ship will be similar in design to how the Virgin brand have designed Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia aircraft's as well as the Virgin Galactic space line… how cool is that? I for one like the design of my ships to be individual and be special to each one. Because, each cruise ship is different. Scarlet Lady is no different. The ship is named after the mystical mermaid that is at the front of the ship. The mermaid is said to embody the way Virgin Voyages are intending to bring the cruising world into the 21st Century. We’ll explain this more in the episode but, the representation in a mermaid is intended to show power of women. This is exemplified in Virgin Voyages Scarlet Squad Program which, encourages front-facing female leaders throughout the company. Virgin Voyages want to change the way women are represented in the maritime industry and to give women equal opportunities to men.

Scarlet Lady will be free of single-use plastics! This means no plastic straws, stirrers, bottled water, or plastic takeaway cups. Virgin Voyages are looking at changing the way people may perceive cruising, showing that it can be more environmentally friendly than some people may think! We here at Planet Cruise are on board (excuse the pun) this way of thinking as both of these ideas are hard to implement but, feel this is a push to encourage the way the world thinks, not just the Cruising Industry!

Instead of bottled water, cruisers will have access to fully-filtered still and sparkling water at all eateries on board and there will also be filtered water stations throughout the ship. Unlike other cruise lines, the water on board will be complimentary.

One of the things that is becoming more and more popular now days are tattoos. Do you have any Glenn…? Well, another one of the firsts that Virgin Voyages have announced is the first ever tattoo studio on a cruise ship. It has been said “Tattooing is a time-honoured seafaring tradition and Virgin Voyages will have a rock and roll style by bringing some of the best ink artists to sea”

The idea behind this is that for many guests on Scarlet Lady, it will be their first cruise and getting a tattoo will be a nice way to remember it. These will be with in association with The World Famous ‘Squid Ink’. All Squid Ink tattoos will be created with World Famous Tattoo Ink original vegan ink, which is globally recognised to exceed safety standards with no animal by-products or testing. In addition to tattoos, Squid Ink will also offer body piercings as well as permanent makeup treatments using vegan-friendly Perma Blend pigments.
