1967 Canadian Armed Forces Tattoo
Canadian Armed Forces Massed Bands
Dominion LP 1357, 1967
Recorded as part of Canada’s Centennial celebrations, this album captures the musical core of the 1967 Canadian Armed Forces Tattoo — the largest military pageant ever staged in the country. With nearly 800 musicians drawn from 17 navy, army, and air force bands, the Tattoo toured every province, presenting more than 150 performances between March and October 1967. It was the military’s official gift to the nation during its 100th anniversary, portraying over three centuries of Canadian military history through music, drill, and theatrical tableaux.
Rehearsed at Camp Picton and produced by Canadian Music Sales Corporation in cooperation with Ian H. Frew & Associates, the recording features massed brass, pipes and drums, and ceremonial ensembles from across the Canadian Forces. Participating units included the Royal Canadian Navy bands (Esquimalt and Stadacona), Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, Royal Canadian Dragoons, Lord Strathcona’s Horse, Royal Canadian Artillery, Royal Canadian Engineers, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, Royal Canadian Regiment, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Royal 22e Régiment, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada, The Canadian Guards, and Royal Canadian Air Force bands from Central and Training Commands. Engineer Bill Giles captured the performances, while Ever Reddy handled printing.
The Tattoo’s massive logistics included two touring companies — the “blue train” and “red train” — which later merged into a 1700‑member stadium production performing at Empire Stadium, Expo 67’s Autostade, the CNE Stadium, and Ottawa. After the final show in Hamilton, all uniforms, props, and weapons were stored and later dispersed to museums and collectors. The Tattoo was televised twice by CBC and remains a once‑in‑a‑lifetime event in Canadian military and cultural history.
