The phrase "Fast Freight" is nearly a forgotten term in this age of railroading. On the Class I railroads, it is an entirely forgotten one, with manifests now being some of the lowest priority trains on the system. But there is one railroad where the fabled "Fast Freight" of old still runs, the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern.
For you see the R&N has a small fleet of these "Fast Freights" running six days a week from their respective home bases to North Reading, an interchange point with Norfolk Southern to exchange freight and whisk it back to their home terminals.
Today we follow the morning "Fast Freight" on the R&N, the NRFF. The NRFF runs from North Reading to Jim Thorpe and return, never once stopping to swap blocks. It along with two others on the system, are are in the small minority of true fast freights left in the U.S.
