Saint Gatianus, also known as Saint Gatien, was a 3rd-century Roman missionary and is venerated as the founding Bishop of Tours in what is now modern-day France. Sent from Rome during the early centuries of Christianity, Gatianus played a crucial role in bringing the Gospel to Gaul at a time when Christianity was still a persecuted and fragile faith.
According to tradition, Saint Gatianus was one of the seven missionary bishops sent from Rome to evangelise Gaul. Arriving in Tours around 250 AD, he laboured for decades to establish the Christian community, preaching the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, and quietly laying the foundations of the Church. His ministry endured through periods of hostility and persecution, requiring deep courage, patience, and unwavering trust in God.
Though few details of his life survive, Saint Gatianus is remembered for his missionary perseverance and his role in shaping the Christian identity of Tours—later made famous by Saint Martin of Tours, one of the most beloved saints in Western Christianity.
Saint Gatianus’ life reminds believers of the quiet power of faithful witness and the courage required to plant the seeds of faith in difficult times. His feast day is celebrated on December 18.
