Reading and Northern NRFF: An Alternate Route through the Lehigh Gorge

On Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, I managed to catch a unique freight operation on the Reading and Northern railroad through the rock cut in Glen Onoko. The freight train in question was the North Reading Fast Freight (NRFF), which runs six days a week from Reading to Pittston, PA and return.
However, on this day the NRFF would travel on Norfolk Southern’s trackage through the Lehigh Gorge just outside of Jim Thorpe, PA.
Typically, the NRFF travels on the left track seen within this video, which is the Reading and Northern’s mainline. However, during this week some track maintenance and inspections were taking place a few miles north of the rock cut, which prevented trains from traveling on that portion of the mainline.
Therefore, an agreement was made with Norfolk Southern to have the NRFF travel on their trackage for a portion of the week, making this a very rare catch through Glen Onoko!
