Procession of the guilds to the fire
Around 3,500 guild members in their colorful costumes, traditional costumes and uniforms, over 350 riders, around 50 carriages drawn exclusively by horses and around 30 bands of music march on the Monday at Sixteläuten via Bahnhofstrasse and Limmatquai to the Sechseläutenplatz, where the Böögg is burned. The Zug zum Feuer is a major event well worth seeing, which attracts tens of thousands of spectators to the city of Zurich and hundreds of thousands in front of the television screens every year.
Every year since 1991 - on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Confederation - the central committee of Zurich's guilds has invited a canton to be a guest at the Sechseläuten in Zurich. The guest canton presents itself at the Lindenhof with an exhibition, a colorful entertainment program and culinary specialties. The guest takes part in the children's parade and the parade of the guilds to the fire with their own delegation and traditional, typical parade motifs.
In 2022, the canton of Uri will be a guest at Zurich's Sechseläuten for the second time after 2000. The guest appearance offers Uri the opportunity to bring a piece of Uri to Zurich and to present itself in Zurich for four days, offering not only cultural but also culinary specialties. Projects such as the "bridging" between the district administrator of Uri and the municipal council of Zurich document the already close connection between the rural canton of Uri and urban Zurich.
Program Lindenhof
Uri and Zurich “True Friends”: From Friday to Monday, there is a great deal of Uri on offer at the Lindenhof: in an exhibition in two tents, 12 people from Uri and Zurich have thought about what friendship means to them. Her quotes are intended to encourage people to think about friendship and write them down on the walls of the exhibition. Posters in the Lindenhof provide information about the detailed program on the stage.
A festival with three roots
Today's Sechseläuten goes back to three different roots: First, to the Zurich guilds, which, as political, military, social and commercial institutions, have guided and determined the fate of the city for over 450 years. They form the sponsorship of the Zurich Spring Festival. The former trade regulations of the guilds determined the working hours of the craftsmen. The second root of the Sechseläuten is related to this: in summer, the "six o'clock ringing" indicated the end of working hours, while in winter, due to the light conditions, work was only possible until five o'clock. Finally, a pagan custom—the burning of winter to symbolize the beginning of the warmer seasons—represents the third root.
