The original version of “Hold My Hand” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on Christmas Eve; December 24th, 2024. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Michael” album in 2010, as well as the original leaked version from 2007; both with Akon, it has been revealed that “Hold My Hand” (originally titled “Hold My Hand (Change the World)”) was originally written as far back as 1984 during the Victory sessions with his brothers, as a duet with Tito Jackson, and recorded between 1982-1984, during the early Captain EO sessions, at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos. It’s believed that this was made around the same time as “We Can Change the World”, a solo song by Tito Jackson for the Victory album.
The song is rumored to have been written with Akon (a young session singer at the time), Quincy Jones and Joseph Kehr. Shortly after writing the song, he began working further on this version around the summer of 1882 with Joe and Quincy. Later on, his brother Tito would be invited into the studio by Michael to join, write and contribute to the song; Tito played rhythm guitar, keyboards and percussion.
While the song runs under 4 minutes, the full-length version is a 8 minute long jam session, with extra lyrics and more adlibs with an All-Star cast of artists and musicians. Donna Summer would be brought in to interpolate “State of Independence” by Joe & Vigil, which would end up on her 1982 album produced by Quincy Jones.
An All-Star cast and choir of artists which included included Donna Summer, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, Peggy Lipton, Patti Austin, Michael McDonald, and Stevie Wonder. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions, to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album.
During one of the sessions for the song, Joe brought in multiple musicians and friends, half of whom would later make up to be The Rag Tag Band; Sarah Greim, aka Syradelic, for rhythm guitar. Barron St. Massey & Eric L. Hayes for the horn arrangements. “The Foot” Moffit Jr. for drums; all for instrumental overdubs later on during the Captain EO sessions.
The track was considered for the “We Are the World” soundtrack album in certain countries, however was shelved in favor for the Captain EO soundtrack album the next year. As noted previously, the soundtrack was shelved at the last minute but has widespread bootleg copies.
Michael would later on revisit the song with Akon in 2007-2008, this one being produced by Michael, Akon and Giorgio Tuinfort. It was posthumously finished and released on the “Michael” album in 2010, while this version remained unreleased. It would later evolve into “We Can Change the World”, a solo song by Tito Jackson for the “Victory” album, which was released on July 2nd 1984.

NOTE: This song is dedicated to the late Tito Jackson. This was recorded and finished before his tragic passing on September 15th, 2024.
