Описание: 1-4% of children live with epilepsy at some time in childhood (in addition to the 3-7% who have at least one febrile convulsion), so it is essential for pediatricians have a good understanding of seizures and epilepsy. We discuss the causes of epilepsy, the current way WHO classifies epilepsy, including common epilepsy syndromes of childhood: Benign Rolandic, Childhood absence, Juvenile myoclonic, and Infantile spasms. We cover the treatment of epilepsy, especially how to choose the most appropriate medication (antiepileptic drug: AED). At least 70% of patients achieve seizure freedom, and most of these children respond to the initially prescribed drug. It is important to understand the basic mechanism of action of AEDs, so that if a child’s seizures persist despite one medication a different class of medication can be used.
