Weather chart animation covering the period December 1st 1962 to February 28th 1963.
The winter 1962-63 really got going on Boxing Day as a plunge of bitterly cold arctic air swept southwards across the UK bringing widespread snowfall.
January 1963 was the coldest month in central England since January 1814. The Central England Temperature (CET) was -2.1C. Snow stayed on the ground throughout the month in large parts of the UK.
The Big Freeze as it had become known continued in February after a brief thaw in late January. Further heavy snowfalls occurred and the CET for the month was -0.7C.
The freeze started to ease in late February but it wasn't until March 6th that no frost was recorded in the UK.
