In this video, Dr. Mark Peterson explains to the owner of a hyperthyroid cat how the radioiodine acts upon the nodular goiter (thyroid tumor) to destroy the bad tissue and spare the good tissue. Essentially, the tumor on the cat's thyroid gland is made up of small nodules which take up the iodine (and thus the radioactivity within the radioactive iodine) MORE than the healthy tissue. The radioactivity is then focused on these nodules, and the destructive effect of the radioactivity is stronger within the nodules.
