YOU NEED A PERMIT TO FILM IN PUBLIC

Filmmaking can require a huge crew. Even small indie films will typically have at least a few dozen people on set, and larger films may have hundreds. So when a film shoots in a public space, it can be disruptive. Crew members are everywhere, equipment trucks are blocking streets, lights are blocking sidewalks, and on and on. It should come as no surprise then, that you need permission to film in public.

In this video, we talk with Amy Kradolfer, who works at the permit center of Los Angeles– Film LA. She gives us the in’s and out’s of film permitting.

WHY FILM PERMITS ARE NECESSARY

First, Kradolfer defines what a permit actually is. Turns out it’s not just any old piece of paper. Then, she discusses why you need a permit. There are a lot of drawbacks to guerrilla filmmaking. Your insurance will probably not cover anything that goes wrong if you don’t have a permit, and you could end up paying huge fines if the authorities are called on you. No good things.

Kradolfer also walks us through the intricacies of permitting in LA specifically. It should come as no surprise that there are a LOT of people who are trying to film in the City of Angels at any given moment, so permitting is a bit more strict.

HOW TO GET A FILM PERMIT

So you need a permit. How do you get one? Luckily, it’s not rocket science. Kradolfer explains the process, from what kind of insurance you might need, to what variables go into a permit’s pricing (yes, film permits cost money). A word of advice: start the permit process as soon as possible to avoid any issues.

Next, Kradolfer pulls back the curtain on some of the more famous movies she’s helped get permits done for. The list includes, but is not limited to, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Ambulance,” and “500 Days of Summer.” As you might imagine, each of these films had wildly different needs.
Film permitting may not be the most glamorous part of the filmmaking process, but it is important. Without the correct permitting, your film may not get done (or released). Better to do things right.
