In this video the spaerk plugs were removed from a 1964 Flcon Sprint with a HiPo 289. The engine had been misfiring at times. The primary ignition system is not stock. It has a Pertronix electronic ignotion system, the distributorvacuum advance diaphragm has been leaking, so it was replaced. Now it was time to try to identify the cause of the misfire.
To get a look at the basics the spark plugs were pulled and "read" (examined). The majority of plugs has a ceramic insulator that was bleach bright white, an indication of too hot a heat range for the plug, and/or too lean an air.fuel ratio. Initially, after the first few plugs it was looking like a very lean aif.fuel mixture. But then it was found the heat range code of 45 was shared with the BF-42 Autolite plug, whereas the specification called for a cooler BF-32 plug. Autolit stopped making BF-32 plugs a few years ago, and said the BF-42 plug was an appropriate replacement. This situation on the subject 1964 Falcon's 289 is calling that claim into question.
I have several sets of BF-32, ad BRF-32, spark plugs on hand. So, after this video was shot the old Autolite 45 pluges were rep;aced with a set of NOS BRF-32 plugs. The result of that change will be presented in a future video.
Meanwhile, it is still felt the air fuel mixture may be a little lean still. But, it is more likely due to a vacuum leak (or several) with the intake manifold. Time will tell. It always does.
