I always heard about the term "Medical Gaslighting" but I never connected the dots to my own experience until I dove deeper into the definition. I saw this term pop-up on social media and was curious how others experienced medical gaslighting in their endometriosis, adenomyosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), or chronic illness journey. I find that language is very powerful - and this statement allowed me to feel seen and heard during the hardest parts of my health journey.
Usual disclaimer. This is not to bash doctors. I owe my life to some of the incredible doctors and nurses that work so hard in the medical system. I felt like finding the right person for me in the system allowed me to rest my feet while someone fought for my best interests within the system. But interestingly, to meet them, I had to go through really awful experiences with people who didn’t listen to me. To this day, I have trouble believing in myself.
If you are experiencing medical gaslighting, or recognize these warning signs in your endometriosis journey, I strongly advise that you seek someone new that listens to your pain and validates your experience. Please do not wait 11 years like I did to receive a name to your pain - you are deserving of proper healthcare and support.
I go into it in more detail in this video - but feel free to provide your own experiences with it in the comments below.
