USWNT striker, NWSL Orlando Pride Captain, current Olympique Lyonnais forward and global “face” of women’s soccer, Alex Morgan scores her first goal EVER for OLF (and the first of what became a hat trick) during the French Cup (“Coupe de France”) Quarterfinals versus Rodez Aveyon Football Feminin on March 12th, 2017 in a 6-0 win held at home at the Groupama OL Academy (Training Center) in Meyzieu, France. Morgan scored the game’s second goal (her first) in the 36th minute of play on an assist from Elodie Thomis. She later went on to score in the 67th and 79th minutes of play as well to complete the triple.

Due to French Cup rules which state that the Starting XI must wear jerseys 1-11 and subs 12-18, for this match, given her starter status, Morgan sported jersey number 7 instead of her traditional 13 for which she is so famously known for. The pink headband, her other trademark, was still a go:)

This was Morgan’s first match back after missing the three prior with severe food poisoning or what amounted to a horrible stomach flu, as well as her first game back with the French club since the FIFA break of late February and early March of 2017, where the US hosted the second annual SheBeleives Cup (‘SBC”) tournament, coming in dead last and losing 4-0 to eventual winner France (for which the large majority of her Lyon teammates play for internationally). The SBC saw Morgan get little playing time under miserable Head Coach, Jill Ellis (with many fans calling for her ousting) and the team paid the price scoring only one goal versus number two world-ranked Germany 1-0 on a Lynn Williams lucky rebound. The US lost 1-0 to number five world-ranked England on an Ellen White rebound in the 89th minute with time winding down and suffered a horrific 3-0 loss to France, who hoisted their first ever trophy in the history of their international franchise, as the US new three-back system crumbled to a skillful French opponent who picked them apart and exposed every weakness possible.
