Frederick Schultz was convicted of conspiring to receive stolen property of an ancient sculpture of the head of Pharaoh Amenhotep III from Egypt, as well as attempting to smuggle more Egyptian antiquities into America with a false provenance story. Law 117 in Egypt vests absolute ownership of all antiquities found in Egypt after 1983 in the Egyptian government, while the NSPA should be broadly interpreted to apply to property stolen in another country. Schultz argued that Law 117 is not an ownership law, but the court found that it is a true ownership law and is enforced as such. Schultz also claimed he was unaware of Law 117, but the court found that his knowledge of the law was reasonable given his expertise in Egyptian antiquities.
