Preparing for a Job Search
CREATING A RESUME AND COVER LETTER
PROJECT STEPS
1. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Tourism Marketing from Western Washington University and a Tourism Certificate from Washington Tourism College, you are ready to apply for positions in tourism marketing. You have already prepared a draft of a resume and cover letter to send to your ideal employer. Now you need to complete the document. Begin by changing the document margins to Normal.
2. Change the page orientation to Portrait.
3. Change the theme colors to Blue Warm.
4. Insert a rectangle at the top of the first page, and then format it as follows:
a. Change the height to 0.5" and change the width to 6.5".
b. Change the position of the rectangle using the Position in Top Center with Square Text Wrapping option.
c. Change the text wrapping to Top and Bottom.
d. Apply the Moderate Effect – Blue-Gray, Accent 1 shape style.
5. Add text to the rectangle and then format it as follows:
a. Type Gary Yang in the rectangle.
b. Increase the size of the text to 24 point.
c. Change the font color of the text to White, Background 1 (First row, first column in the Theme Colors palette).
6. On the blank line below the rectangle, enter the text 179 Cedar Street, Seattle, WA 98101 (206) 555-4512 [email protected]
7. Insert a dot symbol between the zip code "98101" and the area code "(206)". Insert a second dot symbol between the phone number ("555-4512") and "gyang". Insert spaces as necessary so that one space appears before and after each dot symbol. (Hint: Use Symbol character code 159 from the Wingdings font.) [Mac Hint: Wingdings character 165]
8. Change the font color of the address line to Blue-Gray, Accent 1 (5th column, 1st row of the Theme Colors palette), and then center the paragraph.
9. Insert a bottom paragraph border below the address line, using default settings.
10. Insert a new blank paragraph below the address line, apply the No Spacing style to the paragraph, and then enter the following text: October 15, 2025
11. Insert a new blank paragraph below the date line, and then insert all the text from the file Support_SAM_WD365_A_Letter.docx.
12. On the last blank line on page one, enter and format text as follows:
a. Type Sincerely, as the complimentary close.
b. Insert three blank lines to make room for the signature.
c. Insert another paragraph, and then type Gary Yang
d. Insert another paragraph, and then type Enclosures
e. Insert another paragraph, and then type Resume
13. On the first line on page 2, enter contact information as follows:
a. Set a right tab stop at the 6.2" mark on the ruler.
b. Enter and align text as shown in Figure 1.

14. Change the font size of the "Gary Yang" text to 16 point.
15. Format the Objective heading as follows to match the other headings:
a. Left-align the heading.
b. Change the color of the text to Blue-Gray, Accent 1 (1st row, 5th column of the Theme Colors palette).
c. Change the case to All Caps to match the other headings.
16. Check the Spelling & Grammar in the document to identify and correct any spelling errors. (Hint: You should find and correct 2 spelling errors; do not correct proper names.)
Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and then exit Word. Follow the directions on the website to submit your completed project.
