Clean white ash can be used as a soap substitute for "dry washing" yourself, obviously in cases where you don't have soap and water is at a premium. If you need to, collect up your charcoal and ash from fires and the charcoal (the black stuff at least) can also be used in makeshift water filters.
Soap used to be made from animal fats and wood ash and soap is an alkaline, which comes from an Arabic word which actually means ash. The most important parts of the body to keep clean, dry and free of parasites are the feet, groin area, armpits and hair. Charcoal also absorbs odours so that is an obvious bonus as well ('activated carbon' filters are used in industry as air filters to absorb pollutants and odour - that's why it's also good at water filtration).
Have you seen chickens and birds take dry "dirt baths"? Same principle.
