A kaleidoscope of maritime colours is the backdrop for seaweed farmers on the remote atolls of Kiribati in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
This 3 min film shares recent developments on seaweed farming in and around Tarawa through work led by the University of the Sunshine Coast (Queensland, Australia) and funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. The focus is on the carrageenan gel-producing seaweed known as “Kappaphycus”. This gel is used as a natural thickener in all sorts of food and drink products (including ice cream and even toothpaste).
You will gain insights from government and university researchers working on seaweed aquaculture, hear from community members involved in farming, and see the next frontiers for seaweed production in the turquoise waters of coral atolls.
