(9 Oct 2017) MARK RUFFALO HOPES WEINSTEIN GETS HELP HE NEEDS
Hollywood finds itself in a crisis not just because one of its most prominent moguls, Harvey Weinstein, has been disgraced and fired from the company he co-founded, but because the allegations against him describe a dark underbelly of the movie business that has largely eluded scrutiny.
Weinstein, 65, was fired Sunday, three days after a bombshell New York Times expose alleged decades of crude sexual behavior on his part toward female employees and actresses, including Ashley Judd. The Times said at least eight settlements had been reached with women.
It's a moment of reckoning for a Hollywood that has faced increasing scrutiny over its treatment of women, from pay equality to fair employment opportunity behind the camera.
In the aftermath of the expose, many celebrities have spoken out about the scandal. Including actor, Mark Ruffalo, who said he hopes Weinstein seeks help for the sake of his family.
"Well I've been on set so I was kind of not - I was getting a lot of it late and I wanted to... I wanted to make sure that what you were hearing was really happening. Had happened. But, once it started to come across on how vast this was and I've had people since it came out that I know come and tell me this stories that I had never heard before. I mean, it's so frickin' wrong. It's wrong whether you're the president or you're Harvey Weinstein. It's just wrong. And as an actor it's so hard and as a woman actor it's even harder. And you're grinding it out here and you're poor and there's a system set up that you're trying to work your way through and it's easy to get in the positions where that kind of situation happens. But, it's less easy now and I feel like we're living in these times of revelations where we're actually getting to see who we really are, how things really work and now we have to make a conscious choice about them. What Harvey did is wrong, you know? I'd like to think there's redemption for people. I'd like to think there's a second chapter in people's lives, you know? I'd like to see him do that. I've known Harvey for years. But, that shit can't stand and we have to call it out and even if it's in our own community. Tribalism in America is totally destructive so it's wrong whether it's a president, it's wrong whether it's Harvey Weinstein, it's wrong whoever is doing this shit and we have to stand up for it and stand behind the women who have to deal with this in a system that's basically for years has been in place and they've had to negotiate it. So, I have a lot of sympathy for them and I have a lot of sympathy for not speaking up about it. I have a lot of sympathy for settling it. It puts you in a terrible position and, yeah, it's a shame and, you know, I wish Harvey all the best. I hope he gets the help he needs. He's got a family. It costs you, you know? But, it's right to call it out and we're right as my industry to call it out and I hope that these revelations start to change another executive's mind when he thinks I'm gonna do something like this. It ain't gonna fly, you know? We just have to deal with the reality that we're given and that's the reality."
A studio insider who was not authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press that the Weinstein Co. plans to change its name.
Weinstein is yet to address the eight allegations of sexual harassment detailed by The New York Times, though he has apologized for his actions.
