The long-standing debate over GST rates on everyday items like popcorn, buns, and roti is finally coming to an end. On September 3, the GST Council approved a simplified tax structure, effective from September 22—the first day of Navaratri. India is moving from four GST slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) to just two—5% and 18%, with a special 40% slab for luxury goods like high-end cars, tobacco, and cigarettes. With reduced rates on personal-use and aspirational middle-class items such as ACs and washing machines, the government aims to encourage domestic spending and cushion the impact of U.S. tariffs.
