𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 is a type of 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 that, as its name implies, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 and passes relatively intact into the large intestine.

It reaches the colon where it acts like dietary fiber and feeds the healthy gut bacteria present there.
Resistant starch is 𝗻𝗼𝘁 broken down by the digestive enzymes in the small intestine but instead 𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆.
🍌 Resistant starch can be found 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 in many foods, including 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀, cooked and chilled potatoes, legumes, lentils, undercooked rice and pasta, and raw oats.
It can also be produced in foods through cooking and cooling, such as in 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲.
The consumption of resistant starch has been associated with several 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀, including improved blood sugar control, lower cholesterol levels, improved gut health due to increased production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 since it produces satiety and delays hunger pangs.
⚠️ However, 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) you may wish to experiment with the consumption of resistant starch in small quantities because it may cause some discomfort.
