“I think the biggest thing is growth and understanding. I think for me, being friends with Mike for so long, Delroy, to have to endure that type of slur on stage in any capacity. But I also have a lot of respect for the gentleman dealing with Tourette's. I think the BAFTAs made a big mistake by not cutting that out of the broadcast. And I hope that we can all learn from this mistake and do better in the future.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Derrick Johnson, NAACP President:
“I think there's no excuse for what happened. It was time tape delay. They should have cleaned it up. They cleaned up other eras and that should have been cleaned up. You won't find that here. It is unfortunate that to this day no one has been held accountable."
(Reporter: “What does accountability look like in that situation?”)
“First of all, find out how did that happen and who didn't address the issue. And whoever didn't address the issue, they should be reprimanded or released.”
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Shavon Arline-Bradley, National Council for Negro Women (NCNW) President and CEO:
“We don't stop talking about it. We hold even these instances accountable. One of the challenges that I have in this moment is that we've been talking about the intent versus the impact. The intent may not have been there, but the impact is great. And what black organizations and black communities are saying is we're not going to take this or lie down for it. And I will tell you, even in this industry, we have to hold ourselves in the spaces of leadership and to be able to make decisions and have more decision makers push back on this kind of rhetoric.”
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Yumeka Rushing, NAACP Chief Strategy Officer
“It's a tough incident. Really, really challenging. But I think we've got to stay centered on the things that matter. There are always gonna be those that are trying to break us down. But we've gotta keep our eye on the prize, as they say. I think it's so important for us to just stand in who we are, our blackness, our excellence and just rise above.”

STORYLINE:
During the 57th annual NAACP Image Awards, an event that honors Black talent in cinema, music, television and more while highlighting social justice efforts, actor and TV presenter Terrence Jenkins, NAACP President Derrick Johnson, National Council for Negro Women (NCNW) President Shavon Arline-Bradley shared their thoughts after an audience member with Tourette syndrome shouted a racial slur during the British Academy Film Awards.
The highly offensive word could be heard as “Sinners” stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting the award for best visual effects.
“Being friends with Mike for so long, Delroy, to have to endure that type of slur on stage in any capacity. But I also have a lot of respect for the gentleman dealing with Tourette's," said Jenkins. "I think the BAFTAs made a big mistake by not cutting that out of the broadcast. And I hope that we can all learn from this mistake and do better in the future.”
Arline-Bradley emphasizes the importance of recognizing “intent vs. impact,” as members of the Black community call for accountability.
For Johnson, accountability means determining how the incident occurred and enforcing appropriate disciplinary measures.
