“I was in the U.S. in Miami with my friends. So I heard the news. Very sad. As I have family in Alicante and a lot of friends here in Valencia, I flew in here to try to help everybody. It’s very sad to see this. There are way more people helping than government personnel. It’s crazy. So sad. Unreal.”

“Last Tuesday I was watching the news at home. And then I started to see the extent of the disaster and so many sad stories. And also people volunteering to help. And then I felt so useless and decided to come and help. Because I can always go back home, take a shower and have a plate with hot food. And these people are here. And the locals work here to clean up and then have to stay in their destroyed homes.”

“I live in the next village of Picana. This store here is my property, in Paiporta, where my family lives. I want to thank all these people who came to help from towns far away. Total strangers, helping me. It’s incredible. As soon as they saw the damage to my property, they poured in, shovels in hand, to help. It’s incredible. The army as well. They arrived late. But at least they are here.”

“I live in Albacete and came here via Alicante. I arrived near the supermarket waiting for the police to direct me to a point where I could help. And I am here since yesterday. Giving water to people.”

STORYLINE:
Four days have passed since the tsunami-like wave of water tore through Spanish towns, and clean up task ahead is gargantuan.

With at least 60 of the 211 confirmed deaths in Pairpota, local media is calling Paiporta the “ground zero” of the floods.

As police and emergency workers continue the grim search for bodies, authorities appear overwhelmed by the enormity of the disaster, and survivors are relying on the esprit de corps of volunteers who have rushed in to fill the void.
