The Amiga version of Nightbreed is one of those titles I've put off covering for quite some time because I already knew it wasn't great. I had the misfortune to own this on both C64 and Amiga back in the day, with neither version earning playtime entering double digits. 35 years later, I bit the bullet and decided to enter Midian to try and save its embattled denizens in this 16-bit outing of the game.

Nightbreed is based on the movie by horror author and director, Clive Barker. The player assumes the role of Boone, a man seeking atonement for murders he believes he has committed, but ends up becoming the saviour of the titular Nightbreed from the merciless persecution of the Sons of the Free, a xenophobic and heavily armed militia group. It's actually one of two games based on the movie, with the other being a graphical adventure game, rather than the standard side-scrolling arcade affair seen here.

What this actually amounts to is wandering around the various interconnected screens in the search for keys and fighting Sons of the Free and members of the Nightbreed. I'm not sure why the game has you brawling with the folks you're meant to be rescuing, but such is the order of the day. The whole thing can be completed pretty quickly if you know the map layout and locations of the keys, and there really isn't a whole lot of substance to the game.

In fairness, it's not a completely terrible game, just one burdened with a game design from the mid 80's and enough annoying features to make it tiresome to play. Also, the fact the music in the game consists of a couple of 5 second loops and nothing more makes me wonder whether it was rushed.
