Mace: Master Fisto, are you listening? You appear distracted.

Fisto: Confused. What? Oh, no, it is nothing, Mace Windu. Please continue.

Mace: Unconvinced. Right…as we said, Master Qui-Gon. This is most unprecedented. This boy you have brought is too old to be a youngling, and what is worse, he already has attachments. To accept him now would be difficult to say the least.

Qui-Gon: But his midi-chlorian count is higher than even Master Yoda’s. This is a boy whose potential is greater than any we’ve ever encountered before. Surely that must mean something. An exception can be made if ever.

Mace: Master Qui-Gon…the Jedi Code has existed for hundreds of years, and it has persisted in that time because we do not simply make…exceptions.

Qui-Gon: I understand, but if that is your final decision, then I can no longer continue serving in the Jedi Order. Once this crisis is resolved, I will leave the Jedi Order and train young Skywalker myself.

Kit Fisto watches as Qui-Gon looks over at the council. For once, Mace does not have a smart remark, and the others openly show their surprise as they regard the Jedi Master.

Yet he remains fully convinced and offers a simple bow.

Another time, he would have given Qui-Gon a smile and a wink for that; he had done so before in his memories. But now, Kit feels his hands shake with trepidation as he hears those words and knows the path it will lead.

But there is little he can say that will change his mind. Speaking for Qui-Gon will not convince the Jedi Council, and he knows the Jedi Master is just as stubborn as his master in this regard.

As the Jedi Council disperses for the day, it leaves him pondering what all of this can entail. Kit sits on his chair alone, feeling his hands shake as the same memories he’s seen the night before come rushing into his mind.

He sees everything unfolding with this plot. The death of Qui-Gon, Anakin being inducted into the Jedi Order, the Clone Wars, and then his death…

The sensation of Palpatine’s lightsaber running through his chest is so close he can almost feel the heat of his blade against him, even though that is at least decades away. It was the last thing he ever felt, until he woke up here.

But he shakes his head, unable to shake those thoughts from his mind. How could he have given the circumstances? His hands fold over one another, leaving them feeling sweaty and unusually clammy, while the normally confident smile on his face is gone.

Yet before he can make sense of all these beliefs, he hears the door slide open and Dooku steps inside, his movements careful and refined, but hiding the anxiety within. Kit had not noticed it before, but now it was as clear as day to him.

The sight of the former Jedi Master elicits mixed feelings from him. While he is happy to see his old friend wearing the robes of the Jedi once more, on the other hand, knowing all the trouble he has brought causes his fists to tighten as he regards the Master.

Dooku: Master Fisto? You appear troubled?

Kit: Ahh, Master Dooku. It is nothing. I am simply contemplating everything that was said during the meeting. It was a lot to take in, as you can see.

Dooku: Indeed. I suppose no one can fault the Jedi for not being thorough, even when no resolution was reached. It is frustrating, though, to have one so young, so full of potential, be tossed aside because of protocol.

Kit: The protocols are there for a reason, Master. To ensure that no one does anything they are not supposed to. My concern is protecting the Jedi already amongst us.

Dooku: And just how are you protecting the Jedi here?

Kit: By ensuring they do not engage the Sith unprepared.

The word causes even the Dooku to pause as he regards his fellow Jedi Master in surprise. His words carry unusual weight, enough that it is clear he knows more than he appears. This causes Dooku to narrow his eyes on him, but the other Jedi simply looks away.

A part of him wants to let Dooku know he is aware of his dealings with Palpatine. That he knows what will happen if he allows Qui-Gon to head to Naboo. But something holds him back, a clawing at the back of his mind that warns of the dire consequences. It is the same presence that reminds him of Palpatine and his final moments.

Though he had prepared for years to confront the chancellor, that fight was unlike anything he’s ever encountered, and he barely got a few swings in before being overpowered, all the while his companions were cut
