Sedation Isn’t Sleep
Both alcohol and cannabis can make you feel relaxed…
but physiologically, they don’t promote real sleep — they disrupt it.
🔹 Alcohol acts as a sedative-hypnotic:
➡️ Slowing the nervous system by enhancing GABA and suppressing glutamate.
➡️ You fall asleep faster, but REM sleep drops by up to 30%, and as alcohol wears off, your brain rebounds — lighter sleep, more awakenings, poorer recovery.
(Roehrs & Roth, 2001; Ebrahim et al., 2013)
🔹 Cannabis (THC) produces sedative-like effects:
➡️ By binding to CB1 receptors, shortening sleep latency but suppressing REM and fragmenting long-term sleep structure.
➡️ Chronic use leads to rebound restlessness and vivid dreams when stopped.
(Babson et al., 2017; Nicholson et al., 2004)
🚨The takeaway:
🍻Alcohol sedates — it doesn’t restore.
🌿 Cannabis relaxes — it doesn’t recover.
Quality sleep isn’t about falling asleep faster — it’s about what your body can do once you are asleep.
🧠 Prioritize restoration over sedation
