Fritz Walter (1920 - 2002) - 1954 FIFA World Cup Winner with West Germany
During World War II, Fritz was held prisoner in Sight, Romania and was due to be sent in Soviet Gulag.
During enprisonment, he contracted malaria. At that time, only thing he could do was watching football. One day he played some football with the guards. It is believed that a Hugarian guard told him: ''I know where I've seen you before. Budapest, 1942. Hungary and Germany. The 5 - 3 game''
Fritz was on the 350.000 list of Germany war prisoners that where due to be sent to Siberia. That guard, risking his position and, possible, even his life, has quietly removed Fritz from that list. More than that, Fritz got sent home in Kaiserslautern. A gesture that has saved his life!
9 years later, Fritz would be the capitain of the Bundensmanschaft that had won the FIFA world Cup that year. What a life story!
