In this mini-lecture we discuss stem cells, highlighting their unique role compared to other body cells. We cover: (i) how stem cells, both embryonic and adult, have the potential to differentiate into specialized cells; (ii) embryonic stem cells, derived from early embryos, can become any cell type, while adult stem cells, found in tissues like bone marrow, have a more limited range of differentiation; (iii) how stem cell research holds promise for treating diseases and injuries, such as paralysis and macular degeneration, by regenerating damaged tissues or even growing new organs; (iv) the potential of plant stem cells, which are easier to manipulate and are used for cloning plants in agriculture, ensuring desirable traits like disease resistance.
