STORYLINE:
A multi-coloured sea of people marched in Brazil's most populous city of São Paulo during the Gay Pride Parade on Sunday.
Billed as one of the worlds largest parades, the event is back after being celebrated online in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organisers say they expect about three million people to take part in the parade.
Waving LGBT rainbow flags in a Carnival-like atmosphere, people of all ages paraded along São Paulo's Paulista Avenue to music blaring out from 19 sound trucks.
The theme of the 26th edition of the parade was "Vote with Pride - for politics that represents us," emphasising the fight for affirmative politics for the LGBT+ community.
"The attacks that we have received, even from the Federal Government. The parade also brings (out) that we are exist, we are here, we want respect" said Hildo Dorivaldo.
Activists and politicians also spoke during the parade, before national music artists cheered the crowd.
Brazil still has an alarming number of violent deaths of people from the LGBT community, with a 33% rise from 2020 to 2021, according to the "Violent Deaths Against LGBTI+ Observatory."
