The Great Surprise, a Cadillac in Iran

Cadillac introduced its first-ever mid-size luxury sedan, the Seville, in 1975 as a rival for European luxury cars imported to the United States. Two years later, thanks to the successful performance of GM Iran Co., it was time for a high-end American product to add to the Iranian assembly plant. In 1978, Iran became just the second assembly line on which the Seville was built and the first place outside of America to assemble any Cadillac.

GM’s long-term aim was to develop the Iranian manufacturer to be able to produce enough cars not just to fulfill demand in Iran but across the entire region. Akhavan named the new product “Iran” as well. Pilot car production began in the winter of 1978 under the serious supervision of Americans, as it was the most important car made in Iran until then.

Cadillac Irans were equipped as luxuriously as possible with 185hp fuel-injected 350-cu.in. Oldsmobile V-8s, THM400 three-speed automatic transmissions, a limited-slip differential, semi-automatic climate control, adaptive rear suspension, an Autronic eye system, a speed-sensitive hydraulic steering system, soft ray window glasses, reading lamps, and vinyl roofs.

Fully equipped, the Cadillac Iran cost almost twice the price of a Chevrolet Nova. The Iranian company ended the production of this car in 1979 and during this period almost 2,500 vehicles
