Описание: In the first half of 2023, the Indian aviation industry experienced remarkable growth, with passenger traffic surging by over 33% YoY to reach a staggering 76 million passengers. Lower crude oil prices played a pivotal role in boosting the industry's revenue and profitability during this period. One of the primary concerns for the aviation sector is the consistent rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. Since June 1, 2023, oil-marketing companies have hiked ATF prices by 26%, including a substantial 14.1% increase on September 1. This escalation in ATF costs can be attributed to the upward trajectory of international crude oil prices, which surged by more than 18% since the beginning of July.

It's worth noting that fuel expenses constitute a substantial portion of airline companies' total costs, accounting for nearly 40% of their expenditures. Consequently, any uptick in ATF prices directly impacts airlines' profitability, warranting strategic measures to navigate these challenges.

Another critical factor affecting the industry is the subdued passenger traffic anticipated in the second quarter of FY24. Traditionally, the period from July to September witnesses weaker demand for airline services due to uncertain weather conditions. July 2023, for instance, registered a 3% sequential decline in passenger volume. Furthermore, the anticipation is that passenger traffic will remain muted in August and September as the festival season has been rescheduled to October this year.

The repercussions of these factors are already reflected in stock prices, with shares of Interglobe Aviation declining by over 6% in August and SpiceJet experiencing a nearly 19% drop in the same period.

To counter these challenges, airlines are strategically reallocating their fleets towards high-yield international routes. This proactive approach allows airlines to expand their footprint in the international market and enhance their overall profitability.
