There’s a sound most people never hear — a frozen river cracking, shifting, and waking up.
This winter, the Sandy Hook Bay, Navesink River, and Shrewsbury River froze over. And now, as temperatures climb, the ice is moving. We flew at golden hour to capture it from above.
In this video, we explore the history of frozen rivers along the Jersey Shore — from the Lenape who knew these waters first, to the Revolutionary War, to the ice boating traditions of the Shrewsbury River. We talk about what ice does to docks, pilings, and bulkheads when it starts to shift. And we take a moment to just watch — because a frozen river breaking apart at sunset is one of the most beautiful things this coastline has to offer.
All footage shot on drone above Highlands, NJ and Sandy Hook.
