What are the implications of this infrastructural undertaking for #Myanmar and its people?
China’s #BRI is a large infrastructural undertaking that seeks to reactivate the legendary Silk Road. Myanmar is #China's closest link to the Indian Ocean, which makes the country strategically important for the maritime segment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This is especially emphasised by the two countries propelling the China-Myanmar economic corridor (CMEC) - a number of infrastructure projects supporting connectivity between Myanmar and China - in 2017.
Former Ambassador and Chairman of the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies U Nyunt Maung Shein shares his take on Myanmar's participation in the BRI at a regional workshop in Yangon, Myanmar on the security implications of BRI's maritime route. The workshop was part of a global forum series organized by SIPRI and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Asia to fill the gap on the under researched security implications of the Belt and Road Initiative.
