So, I changed things up and set up the old gold sparkle kit. 24,13,16,18 with a 60's chrome over brass 5 x14 Supra snare. I had just made a video for a virtual collaboration with some guys I play with in the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and used this kit, so I figured it would work well for Sugar Mama since Bonzo used a smaller kit for the 1st album sessions. I also used old Zildjian 14 hihats, and a 16 crash, which he prob used at that session as well ...the ride is a Zilco 22 that I had re-lathed and hammered recently. I tried to tune the drums more to the sound on the debut album as well, which is a bit tighter/higher sound on the toms.
This tune was originally recorded during the 1st album sessions at Olympic Studios in Oct 1968. This is actually a very demanding song to play foot wise, the bass drum part is relentless! Another example of Bonham's unique and brilliant footwork, and his incredibly distinctive style , right from the very first album...at 20 years old!
