Samsung is debuting a transparent microLED screen at CES 2024 in Las Vegas.

The screen, which looks like a piece of transparent glass, boasts an extremely small microLED chip and uses a precision manufacturing process that eliminates seams and light refraction.

Samsung said this allows the transparent microLED to create a “clear, unobstructed picture for various use cases in both homes and business environments”.

The company is showcasing the transparent microLED display next to transparent OLED and LCD models to highlight the differences between the technologies.

As well being significantly brighter, the microLED panel is frameless, with a modular design that allows users to personalise the shape, size and ratio of a screen. It is also more transparent, making it easier to see objects behind it.

Because transparent MicroLED displays have higher brightness compared with transparent OLED panels, they are also less impacted by ambient light.

Samsung’s years of research and development — stemming from its semiconductor expertise — have enabled the company to deposit LED chip operation circuits directly on to the glass, thereby mitigating the loss of brightness that may be experienced with conventional displays.
