In this webinar, SFI Chief Conservation Officer, Lauren T. Cooper and SFI Forest Carbon and Climate Advisor, Jeffrey Ross, provide updates on Indigenous-led Climate Smart Forestry (CSF) as part of the SFI Climate Smart Forestry Initiative. The updates include current funding opportunities and collaborations with Indigenous partners within the SFI CSF Initiative.
The two guest presenters are practitioners leading projects supported by the SFI CSF Initiative. Shayna Mason RPF, Silviculture and Planning Forester with Chu Cho Forestry, Tsay Keh Dene Nation, presents “Caribou forage responses to varying tree planting densities” (view Shayna Mason's presentation, here: https://forests.org/wp-content/upload..., and Leigh Fox, Conservation Finance Catalyst with Wahkohtowin Development GP Inc., presents “Silviculture tactics and Indigenous leadership for improved forestry, climate, and biodiversity outcomes in working forest landscapes”.
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Climate Smart Forestry Initiative (SFI CSF Initiative) advances the interpretation and implementation of Climate-informed Principles and Practices (CLIPPs). With financial support from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), this work aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Canadian forest sector by identifying strategies to support forest decision-makers. One central strategy is to support and elevate the critical role of Indigenous-led forestry practices through targeted funding. The Initiative further emphasizes the co-creation of such strategies based on priorities identified by Indigenous partners.
