Introduction to Khatu Shyam Ji Mela
The Khatu Shyam Ji Falgun Mela is one of the largest religious fairs in India. It takes place every year in the Falgun month (February–March)** in the town of Khatu in Sikar District. The fair is held in honor of Khatu Shyam Ji, who is believed to be the incarnation of Barbarika, the grandson of *Bhima* from the **Mahabharata**.
Millions of devotees from all over India come to this fair every year. Because lakhs of devotees attend, it is also called “Lakhi Mela. The peak days of the fair are Falgun Ekadashi and Dwadashi, when the crowd becomes extremely large.
2. Importance of Ringas During the Mela
*Ringas* (also called Reengus) is very important during the Khatu Shyam Ji Mela because:
It is the nearest railway station to Khatu Shyam temple.
It is about 17 km from Khatu village.
Most devotees arrive here and then walk to Khatu Shyam Ji temple as a Pad Yatra (foot pilgrimage).
Many pilgrims walk barefoot carrying saffron flags and chanting “Jai Shree Shyam.” This walking journey is considered a sign of devotion and faith.
3. Free Food (Langar/Bhandara) in Ringas
One of the most special traditions of the Khatu Shyam Ji Mela is the free food service, called **Langar or Bhandara**. Along the road from Ringas to Khatu, thousands of volunteers serve food to pilgrims without charging any money.
Purpose of Langar
The purpose is Seva (selfless service)** and hospitality toward devotees visiting Shyam Baba. Anyone can eat regardless of caste, religion, or financial status.
During the mela:
Hundreds of food stalls operate along the pilgrimage route.
Many of them run 24 hours a day.
Volunteers cook and serve food continuously. ([Bhaskar English][3])
