🎙️ “The history of Sri Lanka’s tea industry begins in the early 19th century, during British colonial rule. In 1824, the first tea plant was brought from China and grown as a test in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. At the time, the island was dominated by coffee plantations. But in the 1860s, a devastating leaf disease known as coffee rust wiped out the industry.
This crisis opened the door to tea. In 1867, James Taylor, a Scottish planter, established the first successful commercial tea plantation in Loolecondera, Kandy. His methods, including hand-rolling and leaf drying, became the foundation of modern tea production.
Tea rapidly expanded across the central highlands. By the late 19th century, Sri Lanka—then Ceylon—was one of the world’s leading tea exporters. Today, Ceylon tea is renowned globally for its quality and distinct flavor, and the industry remains a vital part of the nation’s economy, culture, and identity.” 🍃
