The life and early death of Queen Victoria’s eldest grandson and heir

Описание: The eldest son of the future Edward VII, and grandson of Queen Victoria, Albert Victor had been primed for his place on the throne since he was born in 1864.

Albert, alongside his younger brother George, became naval cadets in 1877–travelling to most British colonies, South America, and East Asia.

But, in 1889, the 25-year-old Albert had become engulfed in scandal.

A male brothel on London’s Cleveland Street had been discovered by police, and it was claimed–though never substantiated–that Albert was among the aristocratic clientele that frequented the establishment.

Three years later, after a proposal to Alix of Hesse was refused and two more matches were unsuccessful, it was arranged that Albert would wed the relatively minor royal Mary of Teck, but the marriage would never take place.

On the 14th of January 1892, Albert Victor died from pneumonia just a week after his 28th birthday, and his brother George–the future Georve V–became second-in-line to the British throne.
