Video Description
While waiting to collect my daughter from tutoring classes this morning I took a quick stroll around the downtown area of Hat Yai and chatted with a few locals. It's all very sad. Hat Yai is much more than simply a tourist town, but many local people rely on the weekend Malaysian and Singaporean tourist trade. Since the borders closed earlier this year there haven't been any tourists and consequently many people have lost all - or a significant portion - of their income. However, Thais are realistic, pragmatic and resilient.
One man told me that many Thais are suffering, but they are aware that they're still better off than a lot of other people. They have food to eat and somewhere to sleep. He also told me that more Thais should follow the late King's theory of Sufficiency Economy and be satisfied with less in life. As Buddhism tells us, nothing is permanent in life. Many Thais have seen their lives greatly improved by mass tourism, but it only takes something like Covid to decimate the industry completely.
I had to do quite a lot of voice over to repair errors with the soundtrack. For some reason my microphone kept cutting out in the street and there was no sound. I apologise for the inconsistent sound, but I didn't realise there was a problem until I got home.
Recommended books:
I have bought dozens of Thai language books over the years and most have been completely useless. However, I have found books by David Smyth and Benjawan Poomsan Becker to be very good. Please consider using the following links and I will get a few cents in commission from each sale through the Amazon affiliate program without it costing you any extra. The Robertson's dictionary is also useful.

How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Using the following link to book your next hotel room will make me a small commission. I don't make anything from YouTube for these videos.
Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
