Michael Valentine Doonican was born on 3 February 1927 in Waterford, Ireland, as the youngest of 8 children and started playing in the school band at the age of 6. When his father died in 1941 Val, aged 14, started working in a steel factory whilst performing in the evenings, often with his friend Bruce Clarke. In 1947 they did their first professional gig. After performing in Courtown Harbour in Wexford Country one summer holiday, Irish Radio started playing his music, and he also sang during Waterford’s first ever television broadcast. He later joined a band as drummer and toured Ireland with them.
In 1951 he moved to England where he joined The Four Ramblers that regularly performed at variety shows, and that appeared in the radio serial “Riders of the Range” on BBC. Val played the role of a bunk-house boy that sang cowboy songs. After the serial ended in September 1953, The Four Ramblers performed in theatres and at American Air Force bases country wide. They then supported Anthony Newley during his tour, after which Anthony convinced Val that he should pursue a solo career.
In 1961 Val started presenting his own programme, “Your Date with Val”, on BBC Radio, and from 1962 onward he had his own television programmes, including “Presenting Val Doonican”, “Singalong Saturday” and "Date with Doonican", initially in Ireland, but later in England on BBC television. He presented television programmes for more than 20 years, often drawing more than 19 million viewers in the UK, and in 1971 he started presenting the “Val Doonican Show” in the USA, attracting more than 20 million viewers on a regular basis.
His first recordings were made in the early 1960s, and in 1964 he had his first hit in the UK with “Walk Tall” that reached #3. Between 1964 and 1973 he had 14 UK hits. Although he never charted in South Africa, many of his songs were popular radio hits, including "If The Whole World Stopped Loving" in 1967 and “Morning” in 1975.
Val Doonican passed away at a nursing home in Buckinghamshire on 1 July 2015, aged 88.
This song was released on 7" single in South Africa in 1975, although it was first released in 1971.
