The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias where people with low ability or knowledge in a particular area tend to overestimate their abilities or knowledge in that area. Conversely, people with higher ability or knowledge tend to underestimate their abilities or knowledge.
The effect was first described in a 1999 paper by social psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger. They conducted several studies which showed that people who performed poorly on tasks tended to overestimate their performance, while those who performed well tended to underestimate their performance.
The Dunning-Kruger effect can have a number of negative consequences, such as leading people to make poor decisions or to be overly confident in their abilities. It can also make it difficult for people to recognize their own limitations and to seek help or advice when they need it.
One way to combat the Dunning-Kruger effect is through education and experience. As people gain more knowledge and experience in a particular area, they are more likely to accurately assess their abilities and knowledge in that area. Additionally, seeking feedback from others and being open to constructive criticism can help people gain a more accurate understanding of their abilities and knowledge.
