Starting as the Kuwabara Hospital to serve the Issei (first generation Japanese) and later, passing through different owners, the building has always been the home to organizations that serve the community. The San Jose Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is the steward of the IMB and maintains the legacy of this living monument.
