LONESOME FRIDAYS 2025 #1 - Last Train From Poor Valley (Norman Blake)

Описание: Welcome back to Lonesome Fridays! This is a series I do for the last ten weeks of the year -- a song each Friday that all line up to form a (hopefully) coherent solo set. I used to do a solo residency in NYC -- every Tuesday night at the Rockwood Music Hall from 2006 until the pandemic (over 600 shows!) -- and I miss it. So Lonesome Fridays is a way for me to stay engaged with the approach to performing bluegrass solo I developed over those many years, and to share some of that with the wider world. Also I talk about the songs and events etc. I've got coming up. So here we go!

I usually kick things off with more of a barn burner but this Norman Blake song has been on my mind recently so I thought I'd jump in this way. The Last Train From Poor Valley was first recorded by The Seldom Scene in 1973 on their album Act Two. I've heard from a bandmember that Norman didn't care much for their version of his song. He put out his own version in 1974 on the Fields of November album, which is what I've based mine on. Norman re-recorded it several times through the years, most notably on the first Blake & Rice album in 1987 (with Tony Rice singing it).

A busy touring season has mostly come to a close. I've got a handful of performances between now and the end of the year, starting Wednesday, Oct. 29 when I'll be backing up Steve Martin & Alison Brown on Jimmy Fallon, along with Sierra Hull, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes and Garry West. Should be fun! I haven't done late nite TV since Steve's album The Crow (which I played on) came out in 2009 and we did both SNL and Letterman. Tune in!
