We never know what our final words will be.
We'd love it to be something mysterious like "Rosebud", biting like "Et Tu, Brute?", witty like "I'm bored with it all", affectionate like "Goodnight, my love" or something that sparks a movement like "I can't breathe".
But it could end up being something that doesn't echo through history.
What if we could change that?
What if we had the opportunity to decide what our final words are?
This is the notion between Carnegie Mellon's "Last Lecture" series.
Hypothetically, if you could only deliver one more class before you died, what would it be?
But what if it wasn't hypothetical?
This was the case for Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given months to live.
When he delivered his "Last Lecture", it really was the final. words he would leave with the world.
His Last Lecture went viral when it delivered it in 2008, and continues to resonate long after he died a couple of months after delivering it.
This was a speech I stumbled upon during a difficult time in my life, one of the first speeches that I had seen that wasn't just a teacher speaking in a class, but something uplifting and inspiring. One of the early seeds that got planted in my public speaking journey.
It's a nice circular journey for me to go back and look at this speech now as a public speaking coach, and analyse why it's such an impactful speech.
