Illegal immigration across the India-Bangladesh border is not new. For years, countless Bangladeshi nationals have crossed into India illegally. The root causes range from poverty, lack of employment, and the need for political asylum. But regardless of the reasons, these migrations significantly affect India’s internal security, administrative systems, and economic resources.
The Indian central government has made multiple efforts to tackle this issue: increased border surveillance, stricter BSF (Border Security Force) activities, use of modern technology, and barbed-wire fencing along the border. Despite all this, illegal immigrants continue to cross the border using secret routes, often assisted by local trafficking networks and corruption within state administrations, particularly in West Bengal. Many Bangladeshis settle in India illegally, posing as Indian citizens.
A large number of these immigrants go on to forge fake documents—such as Aadhaar and voter ID cards—to gain Indian citizenship illegally. This poses a serious threat to national security and democracy. While law enforcement agencies regularly conduct raids and deport illegals, the deportation process faces major roadblocks—most notably the lack of cooperation from the unlawful Yunus government in Bangladesh. Despite several diplomatic negotiations, Bangladesh often refuses to acknowledge these deportees as their own citizens.

Due to this, the Indian government has been forced to adopt a "push-back" policy—captured illegal immigrants are sent back across the border to Bangladesh, often bypassing formal legal proceedings. One recent example highlighting the scale of this problem is the Kalighat incident in Kolkata. Policeman Susen Das from the Netaji Nagar police station was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle violating traffic rules. The driver fled the scene.
Upon investigation, the police apprehended the culprit—Azad Sheikh—who turned out to be an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant living in Kolkata for years. He had numerous Indian official documents in his possession. If not for the accident, his identity may never have been discovered—raising serious questions about the vigilance of local law enforcement.
