Hey everyone!
Made this video as a way of trying to determine the cause of my 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser's recent steering issues. As I explain in the video, it felt to me like the FJ was wandering or the steering would pull one way or the other when driving down rough roads, or especially when braking downhill or coming to a stop. I have even felt it get squirrely driving down the highway which is never a fun experience. I suspected at first that it may be the steering rack so I set up one GoPro down there to get a view of what it was doing, meanwhile I had another GoPro strapped to my head and I was able to record my driving and reactions to when I would experience the steering issues.
After recording the steering rack I also decided to record my passenger side Total Chaos upper control arm rear bushing as I suspected that could be the culprit and I'm glad I did. I really did not notice any abnormal amount of play in the steering rack bushings from the videos as I had thought could be the case, but I did see forward and back movement in the upper control arm and that's what you see in the footage.
Looks like that will be the next thing I address and hopefully the steering tightens up after that!
Thanks for watching, if you have any thoughts or ideas comment below and I can check it out. My FJ has a 3" lift + a 1/2" body lift and is equipped with many mods including 35" tires which I'm sure haven't helped the wear and tear on suspension/steering components. But for a long time my FJ hasn't had this issue (have owned the FJ for 5+ years) and recently it has shown up and I just really want to track down the cause so the FJ feels safer to drive.
So like, comment, and subscribe for updates! Thanks!
