James Marape is a prominent Papua New Guinean politician who has served as the country's Prime Minister since May 2019. Born on April 24, 1971, in Tari, Hela Province (formerly part of Southern Highlands Province), he is a member of the Huli people, one of Papua New Guinea's largest ethnic groups.
Marape's early education began at Minj Primary School in Jiwaka Province, followed by secondary education at Kabiufa Adventist Secondary School in the Eastern Highlands Province. He pursued higher education at the University of Papua New Guinea, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 and later completed a postgraduate Honours degree in Environmental Science in 2000.
Before entering politics, Marape held various roles in public administration. From 1994 to 1995, he served as Officer in Charge at the PNG Institute of Medical Research's Tari branch. Between 1996 and 1998, he was Operations Manager at the Hides Gas Project. Subsequently, from 2001 to 2006, he worked as Acting Assistant Secretary of Policy with the Department of Personnel Management.
Marape entered the political arena in 2007, winning a seat in the National Parliament representing the Tari-Pori Open electorate. Initially affiliated with the National Alliance Party, he later joined the People's National Congress (PNC) in 2012. During his tenure, he held several ministerial positions, including Minister for Education (2008–2011) and Minister of Finance (2012–2019).
In April 2019, Marape resigned from his position as Finance Minister, citing disagreements over governance issues. He subsequently left the PNC and joined the Pangu Party. Following the resignation of Prime Minister Peter O'Neill in May 2019, Marape was elected as the 8th Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea on May 30, 2019, securing 101 votes against 8 .

Marape's leadership has faced challenges, including political instability and attempts at votes of no confidence. Notably, in December 2020, he overcame a significant political crisis when several opposition members returned to support his government, solidifying his position.
In the 2022 general elections, Marape led the Pangu Party to secure the most seats, and he was re-elected unopposed as Prime Minister on August 9, 2022.
James Marape is married to Rachael Marape, who hails from East Sepik Province. The couple has six children. He is a devout member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, reflecting his commitment to Christian values in both his personal and political life.
Marape's journey from the highlands of Papua New Guinea to the nation's highest political office underscores his dedication to public service and his vision for a prosperous and self-reliant country.
