Munnar was developed for tea cultivation during the British rule in India . In the early days, only Tamil Nadu people and a few Malayalees lived there. They were brought in as tea plantation workers. The top officials and managers of the plantations were all British. Munnar also has a number of bungalows built for them at that time. Munnar is a place that has attracted a lot of Saipans. In the year 2000 , the Government of Kerala declared Munnar as a tourist destination.
