Recently, there has been important news about LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) in India. The price of domestic cooking gas cylinders has increased by about ₹60. This increase happened after many months without any price change. After the hike, the price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in major cities is now around ₹910–₹930 depending on the location.
One of the main reasons for the price increase is the rise in global energy prices. India imports a large portion of its LPG from other countries. Because of tensions and conflicts in West Asia (Middle East), the supply of fuel has been affected, which has increased international LPG prices.
The government has asked Indian refineries and energy companies to increase LPG production so that there is no shortage for households. Officials have also told people not to panic and avoid booking multiple cylinders unnecessarily.
Some cities have also reported temporary shortages of commercial LPG cylinders used by hotels and restaurants. Due to the higher prices, some restaurants and food businesses are facing increased costs and are trying to switch to other fuels like piped natural gas.
